Hello. Recently got this 1857 seated quarter, and noticed all the (what I believe to be) die clash marks on reverse. Is this a known variety and does it bring any extra premium to this nicely toned XF45 quarter?
I do not see clashes, but I do see die breaks. Unfortunately, this will not bring a premium. Nice coin though!
Indeed. There IS a very rare variety of 1857 quarter clashed with flying eagle penny, but this is not what you have. On that one, the clashing is very light and can be seen under the eagle's head and on top of the left wing. What you have is a significant die crack. Nice. Which may bring a slight premium on eBay if you sell it. Meaning that if it's an NGC XF45 it may sell for $100 instead of $87 (or something like that).
A neat die break but no clashing I'm not sure if anyone collects seated quarters by die variety but there's plenty who find die breaks and cuds neat (myself included) and may pay a slight premium for them
Aha, thanks for the help! 5-10% premium seems reasonable for a coin with some character. I know the seated dime varieties are heavily tracked, seems weird that seated quarters don't get the same attention, I guess there just isn't as much variation. Thanks for the kind words on the coin, obverse has same toning level and condition, but without cracks.
