I'm sure many historians, as well members here would fight over the the point I'm about to make. The decade from 1857 through 1867 to me has to be one or the most important to the coinage of the United and not so untied States. In 1857 a peaceful country was on a prelude to war. A war that would divide a country where brother would fight brother. A decade where the war would cause a closure of one mint ,and capture of another. A decade of coin shortages , token usage, and medals to honor the battles, and their heroes . During this time the U.S. had in circulation half cents, large cents, small Indian head cents, two cent pieces ,three cent pieces , half dimes, nickels, dimes, quarters , half dollars ,and dollar coins. As well as gold coins struck in one dollar, two and half dollar, three dollar, half eagles, eagles, and double eagles. There was also paper notes printed but most not worth the paper printed on. Coinage was hoarded that lead to the usage of tokens. Store tokens, civil war tokens, as well as medals were minted and struck for commerce. Let see some of those coins ,tokens and medals from his decade... Post your pre, and post civil war coins, medals ,and tokens. 1857-1867 I'm sure that his thread will fill with eye candy that all the collectors here will drool. There's a lot that items that can post here....let's see them all.
The first I'll post is an 1857 Flying Eagle Cent. Through it's damaged from a strike thru grease or other medal object at 12K it's a nice Au. example of this era coinage. * Note this specimen was obtained from the Penny Lady a few years back.
Here's a medal from the 1862-63 time period . These medals were struck before October of 1864, Titled The first Battle between the Iron War Vessels. "The scene of the ironclads engaged in battle" the medal is 31mm struck in copper.
