Thanks for the suggestions. I actually already tried to get the info from eBay pictures. I see some that look slightly different but don't know how big of a difference to look for. Do you know if the difference is readily apparent or more subtle? Can the two types be differentiated by comparing them to the sizes of other mint marks from that era? I'll try to post some pictures tonight. Thanks again.
I didn't see any reference to small or large D's for 1856 five centimes in the "bible" for french modern coinage (Le Franc 10) They talk of MM or engraver's marks size for other denominations (e.g. 2 centimes) and for other years, but not that one Q
I'm going off the Krause 19th century book (which may very well be wrong). That book lists the 5 centimes from 1853-1857 as KM#777.1-777.7 with each decimal representing a different mint. Under the Lyon mint (777.4) they list large and small "D's" for 1855-1857. For 1855 they are further sub-divided by engraver. My 1856 has a lion and an anchor on the obverse which, if I am reading it correctly, indicates the Lyon mint and Albert-Desire Barre as the engraver. Here is a quick snapshot of the mint mark and the tail end of "cinq", which I believe is French for five. I appreciate any insights.
