Hi guys, am a newbie to this forum so be gentle with me :smile

    I was given/inherited a Type 1 Sydney Mint Australian Gold Sovereign (1855).

I've got a pretty good idea that this is a fairly rare coin, but can any of you give me an honest idea of what you think that it might be worth?

    Many thanks in advance.

You do have winner on your hands.
I can't find any recent auctions in which to give you an idea of current pricing. You do not see many 1855 around !!!
The NGC census only list 44 as being graded, with only three being About uncirculated and above. AU-55 is the highest.
I would suggest getting in third party graded by NGC or PCGS.

The K&M World Gold Coin reference book list it as:
    Mintage 502,000
    K&M Values VF=$3000 XF= $7500

In my opinion (I'm surely no expert) I would say yours is at least AU-50 which could be worth more than XF.

Again get it graded for authenticity and to make sure it hasn't be improperly cleaned, both factors would dramatically effect the price.

I think you have a very nice coin on your hands.

    Aceofspades,
I did find a reference price at this dealer's website

    http://www.coinvault.com

Australia 1855; Gold Sovereign; Victoria fillet head type; AU-50 quality = $6500

your coin looks comparable to the one he has... check it out and good luck

Ya just gotta look in the right place ;) - Click Here

I'd say the TPGs would grade it XF40 - value about $2500.

Thanks for replying so quicky guys!

I'll take your advice and get it properly graded,
although it's been kept in a small plastic bag for the
last 35 years, so it's not picked up much damage during
    that time.

Was given to my mom as a present for me when I was
born (nice present eh?) and I've just left it with her over
    the years until she emigrated.

Anyhow - thanks for the time you've put in to looking at this
for me chaps - I'll let you know the outcome.

Get it out of the plastic bag when you can. Some plastics can damage coins over time.

'though if it's not done so in thirty-five years, it probably won't any time soon.
