Is this common on seated half dollars? The 8 is strongly doubled. It's VF to EF (with a little PVC), but has a slight problem near Liberty's head. It was way under melt value in an antique store's junk box, so I bought it.
I think Breen says that there are over 10 varieties to this date...I see some that says the 55 are repunched but I don't see one for the 8... Speedy
Slight problem? I dont see anything serious, unless the problem is that the head is missing... Is there supposed to be a head there? :-D I'm sure the holey coin collectors would love a holed coin with an error, as any of us would love the coin if it had not the hole
I should take a scan of the whole coin, but it's kind of depressing. It still has nice detail and looks original. LIBERTY is very clear, the lines in the scroll are clearly defined, all of the feathers on the eagle look great. They had to put the hole directly in her head! It was $1 plus tax. I've had it for about six months and just noticed the double 8. I just don't want to hear that it's a rare error coin worth thousands.... but the hole reduces it to melt value.
Walter Breen discovered the 1855 over 1854. It is Breen #4858. He does not say there are 10 varieties. He was stating the number of obverse dies used in production or delivered for production.
Right...but I have heard that sometimes each die would have something the other didn't and it would make for a varietiy...I think there are 2 REV dies for the 1922 NO D cent...and more for the Bust Half dollar. But I think I understand what you are saying ;--) Thanks Spencer
If it's worth millions, I'm going to have a crazy give-away contest on this forum! Not sure if I should set it aside, or buy some silver chain and make a necklace for my youngest daughter. It's getting an acetone bath right now (the coin, not my kid).
... a few more pictures. There's a small die gouge across the second 5, and the first 5 is slightly doubled. I'm leaning toward it being a repunched date and not very rare.... but still nice for my collection.
I just found out that it isn't a die gouge in the second 5. It's the crossbar of a 4. I was told it's an 1855/1854 variety. Would have been worth 300 times what I paid... if the hole wasn't there!
Nice find...I would guess that it is still worth more than $1 that you paid... Send it to ANACS...they will grade it as the Breen # and also list that its holded!!! Speedy
Poor Liberty must have an aweful headache. But the coin is still a keeper as far as the double 8 is concerned!
