Anyone ever heard of an 1855 Flying Eagle Cent pattern coin, Pattern J-167? I haven't, take a look: 1855 FE Cent Pattern If it's real, I might consider a bid - anyone have any estimates? ~AJ
Here's what a real one looks like - LINK Don't think I'd bid on that one. The lines around the rim bother me. But you can contact Andy at US Patterns.com and ask his opinion.
but... but... but, the seller has 100% feedback and has been eBay seller since 1998 and he says it is authentic.
That's why I decided to ask the opinions of people who seem to be experts on here - because I had never heard of an 1855 FE Cent. Is anyone familiar with this, who could tell me with fair certainty that it's at least authentic? ~AJ
ajm - did you click on the link I provided in my first post ? Authentic examples definitely exist - there were approx 500 of them minted. But this specific coin you are asking about - I have my doubts that it is authentic.
I think we all share that doubt. That was my admittedly oblique point. If the coin were an impaired proof, the seller should have said so. This is a famous coin. There is no reason to hide the candle under a bushel.
Well, thanks to both GDJ and Mike; I contacted the seller, and asked him if he would be willing to submit the coin to NGC if I were the winning bidder, and he said he would be more than happy to. His confidence in its authenticity, along with a now WRITTEN guarantee as to the amount of the winning bid if not authentic, conveys to me that it would be worth bidding on. Thanks for the help! ~AJ
It's up to $203.50 with 6 bids & 2 days left. It'll be interesting to see the final price/feedback left on this item. As for the line around the edge, do you know what the minting procedures were typically for pattern pieces of this era? If you look at the photo of J-177 in the Redbook, it has a similar ring on the reverse.
It won't get graded at NGC...it will come back in a body bag....make it ANACS... the reasons... #1--its been in jewelry--at least that is what the seller says...and anybody should know that NGC will bady bag that... #2--it has rim damage...not sure if NGC would grade that. #3--it looks to be pitted on the back...by the S in STATES and M in AMERICA #4--maybe its just me but I think it looks lightly cleaned...NGC will never grade this coin IMO.
