An 1854 o seated half dollar I just picked up. I noticed some die breaks and cracks on the reverse. I've looked online to see if this is a specific variety but haven't found anything yet. Does anyone know or have a good website I could check? Here are some pics I took what do y'all think?
Someone who knows the Overton varieties will step in eventually. These are out of my league tho. I have no catalogs.
Die cracks don't always equate an variety , they can be markers in some cases. Useful tools to confirm a variety find. But the cracks themselves for the most part are a map to the die state.
There are two varieties of this specimen a huge O and regular O . The huge O reference is to the thickness of the letter not size. Your's appears to be the regular o.
Thank you for your quick response it's greatly appreciated! This is my first seated half I've owned so I'm learning about them still. Are die cracks like this pretty common on these? I really like the design and plan on picking up more if they are in my price range. When I bought this one I couldn't see the die cracks in the pictures so I was surprised and happy when it came today.
I'm not a collector, but I found this 1854 half dollar in Great Grandpa's stuff. I think he hung on to it because it looks like a mint error. I will attach some photos if this lets me! Nope, couldn't figure out how to attach my photos. Sorry
