I discovered this in my Grandfather's dresser a few years ago, in a small box full of heavily circulated Indian Head cents. I've since been contemplating having it sent off for grading. Coming back in a slab would be an added bonus now that it also has sentimental value. As a child I did the Whitman folder thing, but since finding this coin I have found a new interest. I've actually learned to use a 2x2!! I've also started picking up cheap/er graded proofs. I still have almost zero grading skills though (I need to join the local coin club and maybe help me improve). Anyway, what are some thoughts on the possible grade for this coin? Also, any signs of cleaning? I also have a concern with some of the spotting around the stars on the left side of the obverse, as well as in her hair. Is this any kind of environmental or PVC damage which would just get the coin sent right back to me? Thanks for any input, thoughts, and opinions
Bummer!!!! Thanks though! I was concerned about those spots, but other than "green" I wasn't sure if it was something natural or a more specific damage or corrosion that shouldn't ever be there.
Very nice coin. I believe the variety is an N11 which is common, does it have a handful of short lines going down to the right on the check by the earlobe? For grading I would say EAC 40, maybe 45. I am not an expert on TPG grading as I don't really care about their opinion of coins. That said, I have seen worse coins graded cleanly, and I have seen worse coins in the AU range of TPG slabs...
Thanks for all the input everyone!!! beef1020, I'll be sure to look for that when I can, but the coin is currently with my parents so I can't even look right now My only remaining, and 92 year old grandparent is insisting they take her roll of Kennedys in to a friend of a friend who has a coin shop, so I left it as well in case I decided to have it sent off for grading. Although I'm thinking now to either skip it, or keep it cheaper and send it to ANACS since I'm not really concerned with value, yet still want something more than whatever I could stick it in.
