1854 Half Dime Clip

    Do you think that this is a clip or do you think it was altered later. What are the best ways to tell a clip from a fake clip?

    Looks altered, no real way to tell for sure with the amount of wear. The metal flow lines are gone and the edge of the clip is probably worn smooth now.

    Fake. The radius of curvature is too small. A genuine clip on an unworn specimen will variably show 1) fadeout and taper of the design rim as it approaches the clip, 2) weakness of the rim at the pole opposite the clip, 3) cut-and-tear texture on the clip's edge, 4) metal flow in design elements bordering the clip.
