I run a small numismatic website where I sell coins, and I recently purchased this 1854-P dollar to sell there. Usually I price my coins by looking at completed listings on eBay, but for some reason there's a lot of price variation for this particular coin. I'm not an expert at grading gold dollars, but it looks to me like high AU-low MS with decent luster. As you can see, there's a rim nick on the reverse (not mounting damage). Any thoughts on what it's worth?
2013 blue book has it at $210 for AU56 and $275 for MS60 then jumps to $800 for MS63. note that these are dealer prices. may be worth getting it graded.
Thanks for the reply. I've considered sending it in, but I think the rim ding might get me a details grade.
At the very least, this is a damaged problem coin. Also, and I mean no disrespect, but any so-called dealer, real or wannabe, who uses the blue book as his go-to "reference" for buying anything more than the widgets of all widgets should be avoided. Unless for authenticity, don't bother. Can you post better photos?
I have been shopping these for awhile, from what I have seen you can probably pull between 200-250 on the bay even with that ding probably better as it appears sweet other then the ding.
Any advice for taking pictures of lustrous gold coins? Hardly any overhead light and the coin looks overexposed. Here's a couple slightly better images: Thanks for the reply, that's more or less the range I was thinking. edited
Besides the damage based off the photos it also appears to have been harshly cleaned at some point imo.
The post regarding blue book values was not made by the OP. Unless Ken was claiming to be a dealer in another thread or something, the comments about so-called dealers doesn't seem appropriate.
You are correct, and this was the reason I quoted the gentleman who did in my response. Let's reexamine the post I did quote, specifically the underlined portion: If Ken claimed to be a dealer in another thread, I do not know, but this would and should have no impact on the essence of his statement. As you can see, I was not the one who brought dealers using the bluebook into the conversation, so how you can find my comments "inappropriate"?
lol wow all i did was quote the OP prices that i looked up in blue book and noted for him that they were prices you can expect a dealer to pay (as stated in the blue book), meaning not retail or premium prices, my apologies if no one understood that.
Ken, I think what Books meant is that generally no dealers go by blue book for their pricing, particularly as their buy price. The OP's method of checking completed ebay transactions is a better one. There's no real problem here.
Essentially, yes... but with one word added. As for earlier, an apology wasn't necessary, but I do thank you nonetheless.
I too would like to get a good look at this one and was hoping the OP would provide higher quality instead of just slightly larger photos.
