Hi all. I recently acquired an 1854 US Gold Dollar and it wasn't until I received it that I realised the liberty head was facing right, not left. Having compared it to others, I am thinking it may be a really silly fake, though would appreciate your thoughts...
Wow, what a terrible fake! I don't think there are any details that are even correct! Even the color is wrong! And the edge! I don't think they tried on this one! I hope you can get a refund on that. But hey, welcome to CoinTalk. Sorry to see you were burned by that flame.
Is it bad form to ask who the auctioneers are? That thing (whatever it is) should never be in an auction.
I personally need a closer picture. If it is a fake, it's better than the 1854. (Not saying much TBH.)
Thanks for your help so far, I have sent images to a couple of specialist coin dealers in the US, so let’s see what’s said.
Looks genuine to me (would be a head scratcher to counterfeit a fairly common date coin) but it does look like some cleaning has been done and perhaps some corrosion exists. Likely an AU Details holder.
Welcome to CT Glen. Are you sure the auction didn't list that as a souvenir token? That's what it appears to be.
This is a replica my parents bought thinking it would be valuable some day. They were right, it’s a valuable tangible reminder of them. It’s bigger than the original and has COPY on the shield, so there was no hint of subterfuge with this one.
