I was pulling out some large cents to reply to another post and came across this 1854. I guess I never looked at the back before. I've seen plenty where the "E" in cent has been modified to a different letter (not Coin Talk material) but this is the first one I have seen. Happy 4th of July!
Happy 4th to you as well! It was probably some 19th century kid trying to make it into the other word you alluded to but his mama walked in and busted him.
Do you think kids from the 1800's used that word in their vocabulary? It could have been altered last year for all we know. Chris
It's too well toned to have been recently done. Kids in the 1800s really weren't that different. The consequences were; however, far different. We've gone from washing their mouths out with soap to laughing about it.
Oh, I wasn't serious but I suppose you never know. When I first discovered that people did this to large cents I couldn't believe that word was in use back then, but it was from what I understand. My own kids have slipped three or four times they don't like the result. If they were defacing a US coin with a curse word they would be in for the wrath, followed by a nice long history lesson.
