What do you think? I am at AU-55/58 details due to the rim scratch at 4:00. The coin is fully lustrous with no signs of an abrasive cleaning. The 53 is clearly repunched, which I found interesting. R-3 variety.
The color bothers me, could be a bad dip, and I think it would details because of it. The rim doesn't bother me as much, but that combined with the cheek hits may also be enough to cause details. But... it is nicely struck. I can't get past the color though.
Pretty. I agree with the grade of 55/58. The rim scratch is barely worth noting, but I agree that's not a natural color for 150+ year old copper.
That was my gut feeling. The color (particularly the purply-orange on the high points) screamed "I HAVE BEEN MESSED WITH!!!" I am considering a return...
If you like the coin, and the price reflects the probability/possibility of it being a details coin, then go for it. It's what you like that matters. I wonder if it could 'helped' with another (proper) dip?
