1853 Large Cent

    Sorry about the pics for this thread and the next two, it's the best I can do with what I have. Can anyone tell what's going on with the 5 connecting to the curled hair? Thanks!

    I am not a Large Cent expert but it appears the date was punched high and the 5 ended up touching the bottom of a curl.

    The dates were hand punched into the dies so positional variations are normal.

    The position of the 5 relative to the hair curl helps with die diagnostics, and it touched the curl on several dies that year.
