Saw one of these on ebay. small tears on the edges. otherwise in one piece. somewhat worn bill. closed at $23 dollars. I see where the ones in great shape sell for from $75 to $200. anybody collect these type of bills? handsigned, hand-numbered bank checks are basically what they are. I dont know too much about them . I bid $22 and was outbid. Waste of money? or did the winning bidder get something special?

well, IMHO, you bid $22, so you just barely lost out on somthing special enough for you to bid $22 for.

IYHO: okay, that really doesnt tell me anything. Anybody know about these mid 19th century farmers bank notes? at $23, did the winning bidder get a deal? is it worth $23? is it worth $230? anybody got info on these?

Heritage sold a counterfeit for $86.50 in January, and a real one was part of a three-note lot from that bank that went for $316.25 in January of 2006.

Both sales are in their list of concluded Bank of Delaware note auctions here. You'll have to register in order to read the details on any of them, but it is free, and having the ability to check their closed auctions for just about anything numismatic is well worth the effort IMHO. :thumb:

I'm no expert, but I think the one you back bid on was in better condition - I just don't know if it was real or counterfeit. [IMG] Either way, it sounds like your bidding was a little too conservative. ;)

Generally speaking, obsolete banknotes like that are pretty common...I bought and sold tons of them when they were $4-$6 each, and continue to buy/sell them now that they're much higher. Common issues in average vg/fine condition usually sell for about $40-$50, low grades a bit less, higher grades a bit more. DIRT Common issues can sell for less, and scarce issues always command higher prices.
I reccomend the Haxby set for serious collectors, but it's been out of print for decades and the complete 4 pc set sells for over $725.00!
Obsolete banknotes are continuing to appreciate in value and gain in collecting interest There are numerous old specialty books, focusing on banknotes from particular states or areas, but they're all pretty old. The best way to price them is Hugh Shulls semi-annual catalog, or you can use the Heritage site or ebay to view completed auctions. Mr. Shull also has a new book on southern currency that is nice.
    Hope this info helps.
