Hi, my father and I were looking through his collection, and we found this 1852 gold dollar. It's roughly 13 mm in diameter, and we are looking for a second opinion. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'm awefully sorry about not posting the images directly; the file size was much too large. Here's the obverse: http://img401.imageshack.us/content_round.php?page=done&l=img401/8552/1dollarobverse.png&via=mupload and the reverse: http://yfrog.com/m91dollarreversep Thanks!
I don't think it's real. Too many fakes floating around and you can never be sure with a raw one. I don't like that the top most star is much weaker than the rest of the stars and the bottom most star has a huge, thick die break to the rim.
There are more fake gold dollars out there than there are real ones. It is the single most commonly counterfeited coin there is ! For that reason alone, odds are it's fake. Wish I could tell you one way or the other, but based on your pics I can't.
I am leaning fake but I can't say either way based on those out-of-focus photos. Better (in-focus) photos would really help.
Although the pics are not good, the coin looks genuine. There is no way to be sure from those images though, so you need to have an expert view it "in-hand". Good Luck!
