I got this as part of a 4 coin Canada lot in a bid board auction. Anyone know the mintage? Did a quick search and not finding much useful. *I'm assuming in 1852 there were dragons in Canada.
There is no mint record for these pieces. Even my Canadian Reference books lack a mintage. Most tokens did not have a mint record. The 1852 BUC half penny was minted both in Heaton and the Royal Mint. The Heaton mint issues are coin alignment. This means if you were to rotate the coin on a horizontal axis (on it's edge), the back would be upside down. The Royal Mint are medal alignment, which means the image is not upside down when you rotate it on edge. The heaton ones are worth a bit more. At most your piece is worth about $3-$6. They are very common. Find one of these tokens, I believe it's the rarest Canadian Token. http://stacksbowers.com/Auctions/AuctionLot.aspx?LotID=528861
Standard Catalog of World Coins -1801-1900 lists mintage at 1,500,000 So does this website(though it might just be quoting that book): http://www.coinsandcanada.com/tokens-medals-banks.php?title=1/2-penny-1852&id=110
Wow, a naked guy with a helmet on a horse slaying a skinny dragon...that's something you don't see every day on a coin. Bruce
