I picked up this little beauty the other day even though it resides in a problem holder. From the collection of the 1/2 cent king himself; Eric Newman. I love that it came with the old paper holders. What do you think NGC called the problem? Truth be told, I don't see any evidence of what they called the problem, but clearly the color is off. Still a cool coin in my book. Sorry that the pics are a little blurry, I was having a really tough time shooting it through the slab.
Try these on for size. These are pretty representative of the coin in hand. The good news is that I have another reason to dislike slabs. I think that I'm going to return it to its paper holder soon, it just seems right.
Hmmmm, there appears to be some sort of faint faint lines behind the head and a touch above from the picture. Really hope that didn't get it some weird polished/whizzed grade if its not that or cleaning I am stumped. From the pics the color appears to be the only thing that really should have been a problem for that
I dunno. I'm going with a generic "cleaning". The color is not the worst I've seen, but I think living in that paper envelope for a few more years will help that. Edit: Ok, so, I'm wrong. I found the coin online. I don't see evidence of what they said, either.
I agree. I'm not seeing any luster. Looks to me like it was cleaned at some point in it's life. Still a really nice coin. I would have no problem having it in my collection.
Altered surfaces or whizzed would be my first guesses as to problem. Something gave it the look of false luster.
If the color is accurate, sort of pinkish-red? I'd think it had been cleaned. On the obv I see what look like hairlines from NE to SW. Beautiful detail, though, every star is perfect.
A few of you have hit it. I'm wondering if it was a pure guess or you actually see something. I'll post the slab later on.
I too was able to find the listing for this coin and I'm not sure what NGC saw that warranted the details qualifier they gave it. Nice coin regardless.
