Looks like an older NGC slab with the reverse sticker on the outside instead of the inside as is done now. No big deal and I don't believe there has been any tampering. Such tampering, e.g. trying to switch coins would be very difficult (impossible?) without leaving some sort of obvious marks on the plastic.

The question of the value of this $2.5 is another matter. According to the NGC population report, there have been only seven 1850-D $2.5s Coronets graded as MS-61 with only one above. http://ngccoin.com/poplookup/poplookup-detail.asp?PrintOrder=10596&IDCoins=17757 . So, it's a rare coin. The value at this level now depends upon how badly someone wants it. $20K would not be unreasonable, but sure isn't in my budget. IMNSHO, the seller would have been better off starting the auction at a much lower figure, but with a Reserve to meet his requirements; this would have gotten a little competitive bidding going, the price would rise to its market level, and maybe the seller might realize even more than he expected. Starting it too high discourages people from even starting the bidding.

As long as I'm critiquing this auction, there's a couple other things I see wrong with the way its listed. For these kind of bucks, if I were the seller, I would have put a little more effort into a professional looking auction. Quality images and a well-written description (with good grammar and spelling, no typos) go a long way toward telling me the quality of the seller and, by inference, the quality of the coin. Further, he could have done a much better job of researching the coin itself to be able to pass along to a potential buyer a little more info about the coin. A simple Google search would be all that was needed. He has no stated return policy and for what he could realize from the sale, he could have provided free shipping and insurance. Last, at this level, I would have looked into a live floor auction rather than eBay; I don't see many high end coins with this number of zeroes sell on eBay. In summary, while the coin appears to be nice, the auction itself is a piece of junk.

Yes I have seen it many times. This occurs when a dealer places a price or inventory sticker of his own on the slab. Then if the sticker is removed if often will pull the sticker, or parts of it, under it off the slab. It's no biggie. If you send such a slab to NGC I believe they will re-slab it for you for $10.

As for the asking price, I would say the seller is indeed being optomistic.

It is now my firm opinion that these darn services charge way too much. They should re-slab for what it costs the slab as you already paid a nice price to get it graded and originally slabbed in the beginning!

    That's what they ARE doing.

Well I do not SEE how it can possibly cost $10(ten US dollars) for a slab alone!!

It doesn't cost $10 for the slab alone NOS. But it cost a good deal more than that just for the coin to go through the process at the grading company. The company, like any other, does have overhead you know. They have to pay the employees, the rent, utility bills etc etc etc. I would be quite surprised if $10 even came close to covering those expenses incurred while re-slabbing even 1 coin.

The thing to remember is this - the grading company did nothing wrong. It is not THEIR fault that somebody else placed a sticker on the slab.

Well they should not just be charging large amounts of money if they refuse to slab or put forth a grade on your coins!! Just cuz they are well renowned and respected does not mean they should charge so much.
