What are your thoughts on this coin. It's a problem coin for sure. I gave $2.00 for it about 30 years ago. It was blue at that time and still is. Any thoughts on what caused the blue toning?

The only thing I can think of is a combination of oils (fingers and other things) and Natural toning. ;)

    Carbon paper rubbing? Probably not.

I've heard that ms70 turns copper blue, I've also heard that it only reveals blue toning already present by removing surface contamination that is covering it. Idk which is true.

No idea, but an interesting look. I haven't made up my mind if I like it or not. On a silver coin it would probably fetch a premium. LOL

There was something sold when I was a kid, specifically to re-tone copper cents after they were cleaned. It was in the same family as Nic-a-date and Nic-a-lene. Talking about back in the 60's.

It could be just plain old ink. Maybe it got the ink treatment after the corrosion was removed from the surfaces to tone down the "new red."

It's probably best to leave it. I don't see any way to improve this coin.

I thought of MS70 but I'm not sure is was even around 30 years ago.

MS70 is strictly a haze remover, if anything was at one time applied to this coin and not properly removed before applying a que tip roll of MS70? You would be asking for a problem.

And no doubt adds the blue highlights.

I'm pretty sure I remember seeing ads for it in COINage magazine in the early 90s, but i can't prove it right now.
