Does anybody see any problems with this coin? I was initially slightly concerned about the very fine lines that seem to run diagonally from the upper left to the bottom right on the obverse all across the coin, but now I'm thinking that those are just lines on the planchet from how the metal was rolled out. I was also slightly concerned by the dark stuff that seems to be around some of the features on the reverse. I think it's just some left over dirt though and I have to keep in mind that in reality, this is a tiny coin, so that stuff's really small. Also, what grade would you give it? It's in an NGC slab by the way. Thanks!
nice coin! NGC must have liked it. The dark on the reverse dosen't bother me, and the obverse marks seem may be just scratches from bags (bag marks). My guess is MS-63.
Looks like an 1849 Open Wreath variety. I'd sure get it checked weight wise by an expert, but if everything checks out I'd say you've got an AU-58 piece or maybe even MS. Hard to tell without having the coin in hand. Gold pictures/scans notoriously show bag marks which don't appear to the naked eye, so I'd say what you've got there is a really nice example Take Care Ben
Its difficult to tell without the coin in hand if there is wear on the hair on the obverse, or if there is just weakness in the strike. I'll say AU-58.
My guess is the coin was recently cleaned as there is no toning, and the dark stuff on the reverse is the reason for the cleaning, but they didn't get all of it. the slight dark spot on the obverse was probably the natural toning it had before being cleaned.
I can't see the hair detail well enough to say, but based on the reverse I'm gonna say they slabbed it MS anyway.
NGC graded this one AU58. I believe there's a little bit of wear that is most evident on Liberty's hair on the obverse. I appreciate everyone's comments!
