I've been collecting for several years and bought some coins at a local auction. I picked up a 1848 Large Cent with what looks like a error date, anyone ever heard of this type of error?

It appears to have been damaged.

It almost looks as if it was stamped over a 3?

It couldn't be struck over a 3. Not only is the part of the "3" too long, but in 1838 the large cent had a different device, the coronet head.

It is a damaged coin. The coin took a hit on the 4 in the date.
