Hi, what's at the base of the 1, is the 8 doubled and are the two denticles on the far left doubled? Any known varieties for this year?
This is either an N-2 or N-40, I can narrow it down & provide more detail with a scan of the full obverse and reverse.
Rob is correct. large cents have been listed by marriage sets.. Just like the Bust Halve series. In Halves they use Overton Numbers. In the later years of Large Cents they use Noyes. You would need to provide full pictures of the coins listed here in CT to be able to tell what "N" number or variety you have. There are over 400 varieties in the Large Cent series. In 1848 there are 44 marriages.
Hello there davedawg77. I have this very same variety. I just posted a thread today wondering about it. It is good to know that there are others out there like it. I will have to get the Noyes book they are talking about.
gawdroxx, Can't say if you have the same variety or not. That same obverse die was used on both N-2 and N-40. Need good images of the reverse to be able to tell the two apart.
I see. So then it's possible to have the same obverse as the coin above? My 1848 has the exact same obverse. I have posted a pic of the obverse and reverse on a new thread-1848 BRAIDED HAIR LARGE CENT under ERROR COINS. Take a look and let me know what you think. Cecil B.
I did already. I concurred that your coin was N-40. As I said both N-2 and N-40 both used the same obv die. The reverse of N-2 was only used in the N-2 marriage. The reverse of N-40 is a later die state of the die used for N-42.
