1848 Large Cent - post mint damage to E in CENT or crumbling?

    I'm not much more than a novice with large cents and I don't know which variety this is but I was unsure about the E in CENT. Old damage? Any help with the variety much appreciated as well.

    what you have there is someone was going to reshape the E into another vowel to make a word that most find offensive. he stopped before completion. post mint damage
