Ok so here is the 1848 Large Cent which is kinda flat, the coin is bigger then normal large cents. I posted some good pics with both coins on top of each other and next to each other so you guys could see. The second is a Matron head, the date is very confusing. To me it looks like there are two 8's and also kinda looks like its two different dates, what do you guys think ? Also it has S.BERRY stamped on the front site, any idea who he is? I tried to google and couldnt find any that had that name on the coins, but found other peoples names..others call it Counter Stamping I guess? Also in S.BERRY the last 3 letters look like they are doubled ? and is that a die crack thats in the 3rd numbers place ? There should be good bit of pics up , if you guys need more plz let me know and tell me of what, and ill post them asap.
The 1848 coin has been flattened out along the edges by someone using a hammer or some other type metal object. this flattened it out wider in diameter than a normal coin.
Some have a lot of value Ru8 but, unfortunately, not yours. The stamp isn't listed in references and is far too common a name to have a shot at attributing. Do you see a hint of another initial before the "S"? it was much more common for counterstampers to use two initials rather than one, but there are plenty with only the one initial. Bruce
I think the counterstamped piece is an 1830, haven't tried to attribute it The "die crack" is damage from a gouge on the coin, not a die crack.
