I bought this coin today for 8 bucks. I Noticed something under The one.I'm positive it isn't dirt. Could anyone explain this ?
Hmmm. Interesting. Could be a RPD (repunched date). It is not shown in the Cherrypicker's Guide. If I were you I'd send the pic to Bill Fivaz (one of the writers of the Cherrypicker's Guide) and see what he thinks. PM me and I can give you his e-mail address.
Nah - not a RPD. This looks like (based off date only) a 1848 N-2. The book describes it as a defect under the 1 - check some out on heritage archives.
It's either a N-2 or N-40 (both used the same obv die.) Neither variety is particularly rare, and it is a repunched 1.
