I purchased this form an individual for $8 at a flea market who had it in a box of "JUNK COINS". Is this a double date error. It is pretty easy to see below the 1. The coin has been cleaned but still kind of neat. Thanks for any help.

Off the top of my head id say it look like a a 1847 large over small date. Can you tell if the 4 and 7 show any signs signs of doubling. In any case , Even if its only in good condition you got it for a good price. Im not sure, right this seccond. But I beleive that you would find that marked for at least $20 in a few books. SO what ever type it is. You did well.

No it is just the 1 that shows the doubling. Thanks for the info.

I would have given $8 gladly for that. It's beat up, but early coppers are getting harder and harder to find lately it seems.

It is a repunched date, Bren mentions at least varieties with repunched 1, 18, or 47.

I go to flea markets all the time and I've just got to find out where the one you go to is at. I find some things but you did really well.

    Hello,
I was at the same flea market last weekend and the same guy told me he had some strange looking coins he wouold bring next week. He said they were neat errors??? I guess I will see. I am sure I will be the 1st one there!! If I get anything good I will let you know. Thanks for all the info.

Looks like an early die state of N-27, or just possibly a late die state of N-4. Both have the same obverse, but the pictures aren't good enough for a complete attribution.
