I was wondering what you all thought the grade of this might be ?
Which date type is it ?
(I'm not really up to par on my large cents)
It doesn't appear to have been cleaned.
Maybe a light dip at some point, but no hairline fine scratches that are commenly found with cleaning.
This coin has a wonderful tone (deep reds and a little purple), that I cannot get to show up in the pics.
Also, I was wondering if the ever so light ding below the date might keep it from being graded by a respectable TPG ?

Thanks in advance for any input.
    ;)

I have no business trying to grade a coin, this will be my first time so please feel free to beat me up!!!

I would say this coin is somewhere inbetween vg to f-12

Raised portions are worn but still bold. LIBERTY on headband is almost bold, but not quite. If LIBERTY was bold enough i would say f-12

    Maybe not cleaned, maybe polished?

It's a nice looking cent IMO. Don't know if a TPG would grade it or bag it, but IMO I'd leave it raw. With the cost of slabbing I'd think only an AU50 or better would probably be worth it. Opinions may vary.

I am thinking it would be of the large date variety

Actaully, there is a small, medium and tall date variety for this year. (why does that make me hungry?)
I am sure it would be medium or tall, most likley medium. mmmmmmm. supersize

I would say F-12 - grading company VF20(maybe). I say that because I have a PCGS graded VF20 that looks about like yours. To me from the pictures it may have been cleaned(color just does not seem even or right) and that might keep someone other than ANACS from grading it. As for the rim tick I have seen worse graded, but that does not mean anything.

IMO it would be BB'd for polishing/cleaning, but the details look to be VF20.

Only that it was a small date and I believe it is a N-9.

This is the small date - N-18 I believe. Here is a picture of the tall date - the 6 will be wide open. The medium date will have ball top on the 6.

    What he said.

Unfortunately, my reference for large cents only goes to 1839. But I can say that the vare rare tall date Newcomb varieties N-23 and N-25 bot have a raised horizontal line running through the 1 in date.

But it does look like a small date variety to me.

Thanks to all of you for your comments.
The color looks a little off from the photos.
I'm not sure why I couldn't capture what it looks like in hand.
In the pics, it appears darker around the stars and such.
Also, on the reverse, there are no spots where the color changed that much on the letters.
I think I need to work further on photoing copper.

F-12. There is too much wear on the hairlines to give this coin a grade of Very Fine.

To me that is approching VF-20 and I see no real problems apart from the slightly odd tone...
