Another of those low priced coins I bought. This is a Braided Hair design which was minted from 1839 until 1857. In 1857 the cost of making and distributing these large copper coins had risen to barely covering the costs to do so. Large Cents were becoming unpopular with the pubic at this time. In 1853 the silver coinage helped to bring about a change in the copper coins. A number of coin changes occurred in 1857. Almost 3.9 million Large Cents were minted in 1854.
