I found this Trade Dollar on Ebay today and a few things seem a little funny about it. The date for one thing, I thought these werent minted until 1873, then the eagle on the back, something doesnt seem right about it. The coin is certified by NGC. Do they authenticate also or are they just mainly for grade certification? It seems strange they would slab a counterfeit coin. What do you guys think. Ebay auction#110091098710 1842 Seated Liberty Trade Dollar XF40.

It's not as big a deal as it looked on first impression. NGC accurately graded a coin that shows no symptoms of being a counterfeit. However, a Seated Liberty Dollar has been incorrectly called a Trade Dollar by the seller. "Trade" doesn't appear anywhere on the slab.

According to the Red Book there were 184,618 1842 Liberty Seateds minted at Philadelphia. In XF they were listed at $350 by the 2003 Red Book.

Yea, thats the first impression I got when I first noticed "Trade Dollar" in the listing title. I guess I jumped to conclusions without doing my homework on this one. Sorry for the false alarm.
