This piece is in mint condition. I have not yet taken it to get it photographed, I am slightly afraid to. Anyone have an idea of its worth? Any feedback would be appreciated.

If you can take a photo your self it would help a lot...I don't know if your afraid of hurting the coin when by having it photographed--that won't hurt it at all....
If it is in MS60 it might sell for $400--I'M JUST GUESSING...I photo would help a great deal--

Thanks Speedy, I am going to try and photograph it myself. Its just that I dont have the right equipment to photograph it properly. I will try my best. Thank you again.

    Welcome to the forum neabear.
There are 11 grades of "Mint State", from 60-70, ranging from a coin with full luster, a weak strike, bag marks and hairlines, but no rub marks or other signs of circulation (MS-60) to "perfect" (MS-70). If yours is truly Mint State, it could be worth as little as $300 without a mint mark, or (with a New Orleans "O" mint mark) as much as $35,000 in MS-66 condition, the highest grade listed in the PCGS Price Guide.

When you take your photo be sure to set up your lighting to avoid reflections into the camera lens.

Thank you so much Roy. I will take that into account when I get it photographed. It is an absolutely beautiful piece. I have tried identifying the 'O' on the piece. Is it very visible?

I must ask why use PCGS price guide??
They seem to give false prices that are so high you could never sell at that.

    Neabear
The O would be on the Back of the coin almost on the bottem and yes--you could see it.

Please don't clean this coin as that would take down the value.
and make sure you hold it by the edge so your finger prints don't show up on the coin years later.

It's true the PCGS price guide is often on the high side, but what better non-subscription source is there for a quick and dirty ballpark figure? In this case, at least, the Red Book and PCGS are in complete agreement on pricing for a Philly MS-60.

I am such a newbie person to coins. I used to just keep them just because my Grandfather gave them to me, but this one is very nice, and someone was asking about it Friday. They wanted to purchase it from me, but it isnt graded, and I dont know what to put up as a starting offer. Oh how frustrating.

For that type of coin, getting it graded by one of the top companies - PCGS, NGC, ICG, or ANACS - would be well worth the cost.

In the unlikely event that it graded at MS-69 or 70, the best place to sell it would be through one of the major auction houses (which wouldn't be a bad idea for MS-63 and up IMHO).

    Hey Roy
Ok...I see what you mean...I sometimes use Auctions to see what the going price is these days..

    Neabear
Take a magnifying glass and hold it right in front of your camera and then take the photo...you might have to be inches from the coin but that should help the photo to turn out better
I would get the slabbed my NGC or PCGS...and yes...I wouldn't sell it to a friend if it comes back high..Auction palces like Heritage sometimes sells coins for more than they list for...somtimes much more.

THanks so much you guys. Ok, another question, then I shall be on my way to try and get this done. How do I go about getting this graded? I live in Nowhere, Ohio and I know of no place around here locally that deals with coins. Can you help steer me in the right direction?
Oh, and can I post the link to the image here?

Well..PCGS and NGC you have to either be a member or have a dealer send it in...if you don't have a coin shop near you I would go with ANACS...the cost of lower about $10-$15/ coin and I think they are just as good.
Go ahead and post the photos...maybe they will help.

I agree on all counts. I tried enlarging the picture, but it doesn't have sufficient detail to support significant enlargement.
