Greetings all, a friend gave me a bag full of change and said have had it. I don't think he realized what was in there. Pretty sure this is an 1838 flying cent and I know it is rare but the condition is terrible. What is this thing worth? IMG_20230112_231216979.jpg IMG_20230112_231029311.jpg

It is an 1888 Indian head cent not a FEC value in current conditions.. < 1 cent

It's an Indian Head Cent. The mint did not make small cents in 1838.

Only way that's a "flying cent" is if you skip it like a flat stone on a pond surface.

Common date Indian Head cent. Save it if you like it or spend it to give a collector in the wild a little surprise.

Look at your Red Book. Flying Eagles were only minted from 1856 to 1858. Before the Flying Eagle Cent were large Cents. An 1838 Cent would therefore be a bit larger than a quarter and it would weigh more.
The design shows enough to let you know it’s an Indian Head Cent. In fact, it’s a 1888 IHC. I’m sure someone already stated that. The Red Book will help you in many ways, including identifying a coin.

I really had to look over the picture several times to see the year. It is very apparent that the coin is an 1858 IHC. As was said, the coin is very common. You can hold onto it for your collection until you find another that is in better condition.
I don't know if members keep a library of books on coins, but I buy the annual Red Book, and every couple of years, I buy the "Big Red Book." It's got a lot more information, and I really enjoy it. It's nice to have a Red Book to give us information in our library.
