I found an 1837 Mexican (Mexicana) Silver Dollar while detecting a pioneer site recently. I can't find much info on the dollar. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Howdy ILROB - Welcome to the Forum !! I moved your post over here to the World & Ancient Coin Forum Does your coin look like this one ? obverse reverse If so - it is a Mexican 8 reales known as the cap & rays design. It was struck in .903 silver with an actual silver weight of .7859 of an ounce. The value of these coins depends on condition and can vary from $20 to $150 for very high grade examples. If you can post a pic of your coin - I may be able to help you define the value a bit better.
GD, Thats the one I was describing as well. Unfortunately, I only have a scanner at work and must do my scanning there (at lunch of course) and posting later, at home. BTW, the book I'm using The Silver Dollars of North and South America by Wayte Raymond does not have composition or mintage figures, what reference do you use?
I'm familiar with that book - used to own a copy. But I traded it to another collector for a different publication because I did not find it to be of much use. There was simply too much information - as you have noticed - missing. I find the Krause catlogs to be invaluable I also own quite a few other books on Mexican and/or Spanish colonial coinage. But for most info - Krause is sufficient. By the way - that pic is not mine. I merely went on the web to find a dealer who had one I could use for illustration purposes
