I am a rookie to this Forum. I am an underwater metal detector guy. I recently found three old US Coins all within 2 inches of each other. I am gathering as much data as possible on the most interesting one. It has been graded by ANACS. It is an 1836 Houcks Panacea Baltimore Hard Times Token. It has an Overstrike date - 1828 over the 1836. I have some questions I thought this forum could help answer. ANACS graded it AU 50 for details but with corroded surface. (no way to tell how long it has been underwater) 1) How can I determin the value of this token when it is probably a one of a kind (Unique because of the overstrike date) ? A few have sold without the overstrike date for between $500 and $1,700.oo each and they were from very fine to XF (less than my AU 50 but better surface) 2) Should I get an appraisal from an auction company like Heritage or Stacks? 3) Is it collectable by both Coin Collectors and Token Collectors since it is both a coin and a token? 4) Is there a way to find out if it is indeed a Unique coin at this time? Are there any others with the same overstrike date? All information is appreaciated. I will try to attach a picture. (first time at this) TY Gary G.
Is there not anyone who can help me with a few of my questions? I joined this forum because I thought I would get some help with my coin and not a single person replied ? Water hunter
Forgive my question and possible ignorance, but if ANACS graded it, why didn't they slab it? I'm new too, just wondering.
Everything is explained in the OP's other thread: http://www.cointalk.com/t196244/ Hopefully a mod will merge the two threads.
So we'll go the "possible ignorance" route. LoL. Forgive my question, and sorry to hear of your misfortune.
