Hey there everybody, My son picked up this large cent at a recent Coin Show and I was hoping for some help in attributing the Newcomb variety. The dealer had a huge case filled with about a thousand loose large cents and this is the one that we settled on. Only cost us 15 bucks. So far we have it narrowed down to 1835 head of 36 with small Stars. However, we're having trouble with the exact Newcomb variety. It looks a little bit like there is a doubling on the 1 in the date but it could just be PMD. Any thoughts? Thanks, Mark and Henry
I would call it a N-8 early die state. I don't think these are common without the die crack. You can see the cracks beginning below the 1 https://coins.ha.com/itm/large-cent.../1238-3091.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515
Sounds like you ran into Steve Ellsworth. At the Dublin OH show labor day weekend he had a case with an entire bag (5000 pieces) of large cents in it for $15 each.
Yup, Steve Ellsworth. I was at the same show as the OP! Didn’t buy any large cents from him though. He’s a great dealer.
