    I absolutely love this coin. 1835 N-16 Head of 1836. The best part is that I only paid $60 for it. Acetone lifted a layer of green off it and revealed soft, even luster (although the reverse luster is stronger than the obverse). I grade it AU58. However, there are minor issues. A few spots, a couple rim ticks, and some sort of inexplicable damage on the reverse from RI of AMERICA to the NT in CENTS. It's almost as if it is "as struck" because you would think a hit that heavy would have affected the color in that area or even bent the coin, yet there are no other effects of that "hit." The coin lies flat. I know the TPG's are lenient with early copper, but all these little issues may make this a details coin, and a waste of my money. What do ya think?

    Nice large cent. I think you’re spot on with AU-58. I’d submit it, but yes, it could get AU-det because of the reverse.

    This is a typical Dansco type coin album set coin. And why do I call it typical ....it's a coin you want to be an eye catcher in your album. I agree this coin has a lot to offer.....but do believe it would be detailed by tpg. Again a gem for a type set, an honest coin , with liveable issues that stands out..but for a honest price a great addition to a type set.
    Pretty coin for $60 in a ♡ beat.

    Borderline for me to send it in or not. I'm at AU details.

    The scratches in front of the face and the smooshed NT of CENT will definitely limit this one to AU details, unfortunately. Otherwise really pretty and well-worth the $60 you paid!

    That area on the reverse looks more like a scrape from NW to SE than a vertical hit. Since there is metal movement, it has to be PMD

    Just me. I would not have it graded. If it did straight grade, many would question that. In a details holder, many would not take the time to see how nice the coin is.
    I feel it will bring a strong price just the way it is. Great images.

    Yeah, I just wondered if it was a defective blank... simply because the scrape took a LOT of force, yet everything else about the coin is original and undamaged. But I suppose you're right. The only reason I was tempted to submit it is because:
    AU53 = $250-$300
    AU55 = $475-$500
    AU58 = $650-$750

    It's so true that details coins don't get a second look.

    I agree with @Paddy54, great coin that belongs cherished in a Dansco. Hopefully it goes to someone who will appreciate it and you can still double your money or better.

    When you look at all the wear on the stars, nicks and bangs around the rim, I don't see anywhere near AU.

    The star weakness is due to strike, not wear. Look at stars 12 and 13.

    I’d be tempted to send it in on an economy submission. If it goes straight you have a winner. If not you crack it and sell it raw and you’re out $20?

    John,

    Curious why you asked about NGC instead of PCGS? Think they'd be more lenient?
