Here is my latest addition. I'm getting closer every day (whenever I can afford one, LOL) to a complete set. This baby is a pretty nice 1835 which I thought I had but after checking my coins against my spread sheet I realized I'd skipped over it. The picture is pretty bad and sadly it's been cleaned, but hey completing a set of these all under $100 each is a challenge.

    bonedigger,
Which ones are you still missing?
I have a bust half that is pretty good on the obv. and has two apparent die flaws on the rev.above the eagle but unfortunately, some yahoo decided to carve his initials in that same area. The good news is that I got it for almost nothing and the yahoo is probably long gone to his just rewards. ;)

Well sir, I need the 1815/2 (don't we all), an 1821, and believe it or not an 1808. I think I have the rest. I'm going to go thru them and verify this a-noon.

In deed it is Bones, and if you can do it, more power to you. Good luck!

I think that everyone of us that don't have deep pockets have a cleaned coin or 2 in our collections. Especially when it comes to the key dates in the series!! I fiqure that when I go to sell my collection, there will be a collector who needs that cleaned key date just like I did.

Are you doing a date collection or one of each date and mintmark??
Either one would be hard and that will be one nice set!
I'm still thinking of starting a Barber Half collection but I don't know if I can spend that kind of $$ right now so I think I'll go with something else.

Right now it's mainly a date set, although I have duplicates of some dates for the different varities. So, when I get all the dates, I'll expand it to include the major varities. I'm not one to chase ALL the die states and Overton types though.

The coin looks pretty good bone but the table looks like it has a few hairlines and bag marks on it so I'm giving it a G25.. :D

Depending on who the yahoo is, I think this actually makes the coin more interesting. You have a coin that some guy from the 1840's with a craving knife decided to grafiti. And he did it in a non-obstructive way.

The Alamo has similar grafiti from 1812 on its walls. And the Benet House in Brooklyn has scratched in Grafiti from German soldiers during its occupation in 1776 by the Brittish. That's a pretty cool this for a privately owned home.

I agree that it certainly DOES make the coin more interesting. But, who's to say it was carved in the 1840's? It may have been carved last year...

Regardless, it's a neat coin of which I wouldn't mind owning. I tend to think the "yahoo" carved his initials in the coin while sitting at his table in the 1840's while using a candle for light. He wouldn't have to worry about the telephone ringing and bothering him while he did so. He was probably a bored teenager and didn't have TV, video games or other modern distractions to bother him while he carved his initials.

    Very interesting... :)

And then he probably held on to it, which is why this coin probably survived almost 2 centurys of random chance.

It is a very cool coin!

OK,you guys have convinced me.From now on the anonymous "yahoo" will be known as E.L.W...the knife guy....and I'm sure he's in Heaven.
Bonedigger,I hope you show us photos of each new half as you get them and then one of the whole set..We love pics!
