Hello all, This is the first time I have seen the "Burnished" designation outside of the modern US platinum/gold/silver special "W" uncirculated issues that are referenced as Burnished. Does anyone know what Burnished means on this 1/2 cent? It is a details grade. The definition of burnished is polished...so is this just a polished coin? Thank you! photos courtesy of Heritage
I don't know how ANACS defines it, but NGC defines "burnished" as basically "really aggressively polished." See https://www.ngccoin.com/pdf/details_grading_brochure.pdf
Yup. I visualize "burnished" as "whizzed, but not quite to the point where metal has been moved around." Enthusiastically assisted, shall we say.
That would be my guess as well. Not quite whizzed, but cleaned mechanically in some way. I can't make out what they are seeing in the images though.
Here's the coin at Heritage: http://coins.ha.com/c/search-result...Ntt=1835&ic4=Refine-CoinGradingService-102615 I don't like the reverse at all in those images.
