If you are a new collector I would suggest you avoid that look. It is not good on circulated, mid-nineteenth century coinage.
That's one harshly-cleaned Bustie! If you haven't already made the purchase and you're just here looking for some opinions - please, listen to me now - stay far, far, far away from that coin!
Wow... I wouldn't even go AU details. I agree on harshly cleaned, but it's also worn below AU. I would say VF35/XF40 based upon the wear on the obverse hair near the date. The reverse makes me actually think it might be counterfeit. The wear looks VF, but the bottom looks like the coin had no collar. I really think it might be a fake.
Well, you might not want to write this coin off too quickly if you are into varieties. Yeah, it is harshly cleaned but it is still interesting. It is an O-110 which is an R4 Very Scarce with only 81-200 known pieces. It is a small date, small letters variety. It also shows off the cool circular die crack on the reverse nicely. Mike
I think I saw that one on FleaBay recently. EXF Details, Cleaned excessively, damaged around the reverse rim area
Even as an R4 die marriage, in that condition, the coin/variety is not desirable and realistically not worth a premium. When it comes to collecting CBHs by D.M., for most (include myself) originality comes first. So - I reiterate - OP, stay away from this coin!
Nahh, a whizzing would look a lot better. Harshly cleaned. If I were you, I would do my best to avoid that seller and any images like that. Do you have a link to the auction?
Seller ID is apparently: carrieafl That said, the seller does seem to note when coins are cleaned in their auction titles.
I don't see it for this coin. And he states "awesome luster" in the description. The coin sold for $231.38. http://www.ebay.com/itm/HIGH-ABOUT-UNCIRCULATED-1834-CAPPED-BUST-SILVER-HALF-DOLLAR-NO-RESERVE-/200848737368?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item2ec3848458&nma=true&si=PHXKyvRm2ivhPKk%2BfmwAHmW%2FF6Y%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
Hopefully is isn't a thread hijack, but what is whizzing and what specifically indicates harsh cleaning on this coin?
