i have an 1834 cappedbust half dollar and the edge lettering is comletely doubled it is written forward and backward over itself. any thoughts on value or rarity?
These are pretty common, What happened IMO was that the coin got put through the lettering mill and then put through it again upside down. I don't think there is any added value to it.
i heard somewhere that it was rare for edge lettering to be completely doubled/reversed...oh well. thanx cazkaboom
I've seen that before several times I got one like that it went thru the lettering machine twice I've seen many reeded coins that this has happened to the reeding is overly fine or uneven when it does
Could you show us a picture. While it isn't uncommon to find some lettering overlapping it is much more uncommon to find the lettering either doubled or flipped over with all the lettering doubled.
