The diagnostic for JR-4 is the "1 placed high". This is a low grade coin but appears to meet the diagnostic to my eye.

The placement of star 13 relative to the hair curl suggests this is the obverse used for JR-6, JR-8, and JR-9. The placement of the 1 is similar to JR-4, but the position of star 13 rules out JR-4.

A picture of the reverse would be useful to complete the attribution.

Thank you for your response. I wasn't aware of the star as a diagnostic. I'm afraid the reverse may not be much help.

One side of the coin being completely gone is a problem that plagues this series. Fortunately, the top of “10 C.” is visible, so there is something to work with.

On JR-6, the C is almost below the eagle’s claw. This is not the case for your coin.

The C is positioned similarly on JR-8 and JR-9. However, the 0 on JR-9 is placed further left than the 0 on JR-8 relative to that “peak” between the 0 and C. With this in mind, I am fairly confident that your coin is JR-9, R2.

Thanks again. You make a convincing case, I'll take a deeper look at the JR-9 variety.

Definitely not JR-9 stars 7 and 13 are wrong. To me the obverse looks like die 1 used on JR-1, 3, 4, and 10. Thestem above the C seems to be well left of the edge of the C which most closely matches JR-1

For JR-1, 3, 4, and 10, only one point of star 13 is close to the hair curl. For JR-6, 8, and 9, two points of star 13 are close to the hair curl. On this dime, two points of star 13 are near the hair curl.

I have much to learn about dimes and dime varieties. Great discussion for an AG-3 coin, thanks!

But on 6,8, and 9 the star points much higher up on the curl than it does on the OP coin. Also the 7th star is pointing at the notch where the hair meets the coronet. On 6, 8, and 9 it points higher up on the headband.

Star 13 is in the correct position for JR-6, 8, and 9. Star 7 is in a similar position for obverse 1 (used for JR-1, 3, 4, and 10) and obverse 4 (used for JR-6, 8, and 9), so slightly blurry images could account for the discrepancy.

Other pick up points clinching obverse 4 are the orientation of the 8 relative to the other digits in the date (the 8 leans left on obverse 4) and the position of the second 3 relative to the hair curl above it (the 3 is a little further to the left on obverse 4).

Images of the die marriages can be found at the following link for comparison.

Thanks for the link. You've both helped me look at the coin with a better eye.

Points I'm trying to reconcile in my own mind: The elevated "1". The "8" relative to the rest of the date. A well-worn star #13. A good exercise.
