This is my first post, so bear with me. I have an 1832 CBHD with lettering on the rim that shows a doubling of the "D" on Dollar. The lettering may even have been printed upside down. As a first timer I have 3 questions: 1) Is this a variety or error 2) Where the heck can I find any listings on the Overton varieties without actually buying the book. 3) Any idea on the grade? I have only 1 early half, and can't justify spending the $ on a book for 1 coin.
Welcome to CoinTalk... and there's a few mwmbers here that are well versed on CBH's, so hang in there and I'm sure you'll get some answers!
It's really best to buy the Parsley book on Overtons , if you're going to collect them . If you don't want to get the book there's one place that has many listed with pics . But it still isn't complete . Id give your coin a Detailed EF - 45 due to the hit on Liberties cheek , still a very nice coin . http://www.numissociety.com/forumdisplay.php?119-Bust-Halves
Edge Lettering errors are pretty common on Bust Halfs Here one I picked up years ago. lll-O-1 Overlapping edge Motto or design Over lapping edge letters or design are defined as A Planchet which was rolled or turned to receive impressions between a pair of edge dies, which were out of adjustment or which had a slippage in the drive mechanism, showing on the struck coin as over lapping edge impressions from the two dies. Rariety level 3-4 values $5 to 10 maybe more depending on how bad over the coins true value. Shown an 1836 Bust Half notice picture #3 the H O A R L F as it should read FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR Picture # 3 you can see where HALF AND the word OR have been mixed together.
Here are the rest of the pictures of the coin edges posted above. notice also picture #5 as the word CENTS is mis-placed in the spacing .
Here is a link that may be helpful : http://www.cointalk.com/t39789/ I think your coin could grade VF30-VF35, but it's hard to tell what the mark on the cheek is, it appears to be a little dig. Anyway, cool coin, and Welcome to CoinTalk.
