A couple of days ago I picked up a 1831 LM-5 half dime in the Fixed Price List sale of Steve Crain half dimes. I don't have it in hand yet, just the PCGS Tru View photo which I've been using to validate the attribution using the LM book and the website https://web.archive.org/web/2018040...hinghalfdimes.com/attribute-my-half-dime.html The coin is showing all the obverse and reverse attributes of the LM-5 (Obverse 2 and Reverse N) with the following little problem: Obverse 2 is listed as a repunched Star 2. Obverse 3 is listed with a repunched Star 3. On my coin I cannot tell for certain from the Tru View photo if Star 2 is repunched but it definitely shows Star 3 repunched. So far I haven't found any references that state that Star 3 is repunched on Obverse 2. Any thoughts?
Both stars have been recut. That's pretty common on h-10's , also have remarriages on certain dates , which at times can be frustrating. Nice coin BTW ! And correct on the attribution. You may find more details in a Valentine text,or the Breen encopedia.
@Paddy54, thanks for the reply. I have checked my Valentine, Breen (not the encyclopedia) and Revier resources and can find no reference to a repunched Star 3 on Obverse 2. And the 1831 LM-5 is not a listed re-marriage. I think what I'll do (and this is probably just idle academic curiousity at this stage) is seek out photos of other examples of 1831 LM-5 to see if the repunched star 3 is a common occurrence.
