1831 had a mintage of 3,359,260. There is a Large and a Medium Letter variety. Not sure which yours is.
I will look up and read on it. I’m very surprised he found that in change at store. He is thinking it was in a roll of quarters.
Large letters. Note the position of S in relation to the leaf. Crazy that it was found in circulation.
1831! Where's that old gal been for the last 191 years? I assume that the pitting would indicate environmental effect. Maybe dug and cleaned? Sill a neat coin!
Pam - first great find. Where did you get those pictures for Large and Medium Letters? Looking at my book I see nothing with the 13th leaf being that far left. The closet would be an N-5 which is Nearly Center - so just bit more right on leaf 13. Based off my book medium(or small as newcomb says) that leaf could be past right(PR) for N-2, Nearly Center(NC) for N-3, PR for N-4, NC for N-5 and Slightly past right SPR for N-11. Long time since I have attributed one of these off my newcomb book. To me on this coin I see a start of double profile and maybe N-6 or N-7. Maybe I missed something.
My hubby. He is a manager at a store. He is not sure if it was a roll or customer may have used to pay for something. Maybe they did not realize it was an USA coin. Who knows?
Wow, Pam! That's awesome! Beat up, but what do you expect for a coin that old?! How lucky that your hubby found it!
