I have just aquired a British Farthing from 1831 in vf-xf condiction, while looking it over I noticed it had George 4TH down as GULIELMUS IIII. Does anyone know why the spelling of George was different? and why it had IIII instead IV? JonySky

I don't believe I've welcomed you to the forum yet Jony, so consider it done.
Probably because that's the Latin spelling for William, who briefly occupied the throne between George IV and Victoria. :D
At that time both "IIII" and "IV" were used somewhat interchangeably to represent 4, as can be seen on other coins of the same general period.

    Thanks

I appreciate the info, it's seems the more I learn, the less I know. This is a great place to find answers to my frequent questions. JonySky

Well you're ahead of me then Jony. It took me quite a few years to realize that the truly wise man recognizes how much there is yet to learn ;)
