Hello, I'm looking into starting a type collection. I found this online and its from a nearby coin dealer. He wants $236. I'm not the best at grading but from the photos I'd think 35? Can I get some opinions if I should get this and if the price is reasonable. Thanks
Nice detail. Looks like it's retoning after an old cleaning. I don't like the obverse ding along the jawline. Mushy denticles on the lower reverse. 35 looks right as far as detail. I think I'd pass. For a type set, you only need one, so you might as well make it a really nice, no-problems piece. This one clearly has at least a couple issues.
The denticles on the obv don't bother me at all, typical of many varieties. However, I agree on everything else that Paul said Plus the price seems high
Thanks for the advice. I guess my up question should be are there any coins of this time period that are worth grading but havn't or should I be focusing on slabbed ones?
There are many that haven't been slabbed, and I have some of them, and they'll stay raw, at this point anyway. Just take your time and have fun
I might go 40 on this one as a lot that looks like wear could be from a weak strike . Still the pics aren't the clearest and for a type set you can do a lot better at that price .
