Does anyone know if the 1830 Charles X 20-franc gold coin with the reeded edge (KM#A726) also has lettering on the edge? What does the reeding look like? Does anyone have a picture of the edge? Thanks.

Krause lists 3 1830 20 franc pieces with an "A" (Paris) mintmark.

KM#726.1 is in the regular series of plain-edge coins, mintage 431,000.

KM#A726 is listed as "Reeded edge", mintage 1,707,000.

KM#739.1 is listed as "Incuse edge lettering", mintage 18,000.

KM#746.1 is listed as "Raised edge lettering", mintage "included above".

From that information I would assume that the reeded edge coins have no edge lettering, and the edge lettered coins have no reeding.

According to Krause the reeded edge coin was only minted at Paris; Rouen ("B") and Lille ("W") both produced both types of edge lettered coins, and Nantes ("T") also produced raised lettering.

    Hello
From the informations I have (Le Franc VI), the reeded edge 20 francs (#F.522) has no lettering on the edge. The mintage is supposed to be 1,797 rather than 1,707,000 as KM says. This coin is scarce, and has been regarded as an "essai" for a long time. Also beware of tooled examples made from some 20 francs with incuse edge lettering. They are lighter

    Thanks to Cucumbor and satootoko

Thanks to both of you for your quick replies. I have the same information from Le Franc V and Krause, and drew the same conclusion that this coin (#F.522, KM#A726) has only reeding on the edge and no lettering. (I don't know how it could have both.) But the coin is very rare (as Cucumbor says, a mintage of only 1,797), so I have never seen one. (I would love to buy one, if anyone knows where there is a genuine one available.)

I have been shown obverse and reverse photos purporting to be of this coin, but from the little of the edge I can see from the photos, I can see no reeding and there seem to be traces of lettering, which is why I posted my question. It must be a phony.
