Hi CT, I have a 1830 (large 0) bust half that I inhertited from my grandfather. I don't believe it is the large letter variety, but would be interested in what you think. While you're looking, what would you give it for a grade? Thanks! Jonathan
I don't think it has large letters. In the redbook, it shows large letters being closer to the edge. Looks around AU-53.
It's a large 0, small letters. I'd guess VF35. It's been cleaned in the past. Hard to say if the TPG's would find it acceptable. Sure is pretty! Lance.
Yup... Definitely "Small Letters". The letters' base serifs don't touch, space between 'A' and 'M' in "AMERICA" don't line up with the end of the banner/scroll, and the letters simply aren't close enough to the denticles to be the "Large Letters" variety. I'd call it an XF, and, as already pointed-out, the coin's been cleaned. Personally, I don't believe a TPG would accept it, or label it numerically. -Brian
I didn't think there were LL variety's in 1830. Anyway, yours is the O-122 variety which is as you said, one of the Large 0 varieties. I would think it has XF details, but as others have said, it won't grade cleanly. Still a very nice piece. Mike
Thanks everyone. Yes, it was cleaned decades ago, but in my eyes still has a lot of appeal (and is a piece of family history). Mike, thanks for the Overton attribution. That is one area of collecting that I need to study a bit more. Jonathan
