this is an 1829 half dollar that i won from ebay. i think i paid to much but thats ok,i dont mind paying a little more for a coin i need for my type set. it looks nice and i like it a lot. can anyone offer a grading opinion ,i think it might be an xf or an au. i dont think i am qualified to call it an au, i know some of you out there are..those scraches going left to right on obv are not that bad on the coin but it has been cleaned. whats up with the way the stars seem to be attached to the rim, also, can anyone tell me the overtone number? that would be great. appreciate the help guys. thanks
That's a nice looking piece. Details wise, I would call it an XF-45++. The coin has been cleaned at some point, like many of these have been. The wierd looking stars are the result of die wear/erosion from excessive use of the dies.
The obverse is probably XF+ The reverse is AU-50. Obverse may be wiped, but the reverse looks natural. Nice coin.
Nice coin. If you look at the Red Book, page 182 closely the examples shown there also have that connection of the stars to the rim. I'm not sure but appears to be part of the design. Your photo is lots better than the one in The Red Book but it's there also. Probably the connection is so the stars don't fall off.
Yes, Carl is correct about the stars. with die wear and polishing they start to be 'drawn' to the rim. late die state.
thanks for the opinion guys. in looking closer i just noticed that the 2 "A"s in America seem to be filled, is this typical of bust half dollars, or is it an attribute for Overton numbers. can anybody tell me what O # it might be. by the way i paid $200 for it,probably to much but it is the nicest capped bust that i own,so i like it.
To be sure Is the 9 in the date recut to the right? reverse: is the STA & the E in STATES recut? The O-111. However, I am not sure the A in States should be clear and I don't see it.
i dont know what recut letters or numbers look like dont have any pictures to compare with can anybody suggest a web site thanks for the opinions
I think you should not worry about the price at all. You did good at that. If you start to worry about the cost, you'll loose the enjoyment of having that coin. You wanted it and now you have it so be happy with a nice looking coin. Of course if the cost does bother you, you could always just send it to me, free natually.
hi Just Carl thats the way i feel about my collection.if i have to pay a little more for a coin i like or need thats ok ,i consider myself a collector not an investor.
No offense, it is in my opinion, a VF-XF. Unfortunatly, it looks like it was cleaned with an abrasive. The polishing lines are so apparent, it hurts. The Bust halves are rife with coins that had been cleaned "back in the day". I have never seen a good explanation as to when all these older cleanings took place. It may have been 50-70 years ago, maybe even longer ago... This coin has suffered a recent abrasive cleaning. This is evident to anyone who has seen more than a few of these coins. The polishing lines are so clearly apparent........
