Looks like the coin has been whizzed. All of the protected areas are still dark and I don't think it is all from shadows.

It looks a little fishy on Miss Liberty's bust below the neckline! Also, I believe there is too much separation between the "I" and "C" and the "C" and last "A" in AMERICA. Unless it is the lighting, I have never seen one quite that bright red and would be concerned by that and the aforementioned items!

Not that i'm an expert at all, but to me it looks like its clearly way too bright red for that old of a coin. After 180 years i'm sure it wouldn't have kept that prefect mint red color. Its either been cleaned or is counterfeit.

I'd love to see pics of the edge of the coin. :kewl:

I agree with Rzage, there's just something about it that doesn't look right but I other than the obvious cleaning, I can't figure out what is giving me that creepy feeling. :goofer:

    Ribbit :)

Its hard to tell with those pictures. The pictures are overexposed and that may be why the coin is miscolored. Noticed the background. I blew the coin up and can see no obvious evidence the coin has been whizzed or cleaned. There are alot of shadows or they appear to be shadows to me.

In this case pictures are not telling the story, good or bad I think. Copper is really hard to capture in a photo. At least for me.

Jim could be right, but in this case I would certainly stay away since the color does not look right. Bad pictures always tell me to stay away.

    New Picture

Ask the guy to post some new pictures...

Tell him to use a bright white light, no flash, and put the coin on top of a piece of white printer paper.

Camera flashes distort pictures of coins, and yellow light "hides" problems especially in gold & copper. Putting the coin in front of a white surface gives you a frame of reference for the color of the coin.

It would appear from the existing picture that the color is off.

Even sheen over the entire coin. It's either been evenly lit from all sides (which isn't the case because it does show shadows) or it has been harshly cleaned. No cartwheel luster which Uncs of these do show. Notice the sellers from Arizona. Clean a copper coin out there and in the dry environment it doesn't retone.

    Coin no worky.

Worse than cleaned, the thing looks downright polished to me. Plus the funk to the right of the date. Clearly a problem coin, sure to be body bagged if submitted.

I've never seen a Classic head with such a weak strike over the band :middle of the hair: when the rest isn't weakly struck .
